Day Five
Genesis 15:7-21
God promises to be with us, and we can trust in His faithfulness. My family has had many injuries, multiple disorders, and many potentially difficult diagnoses. Through all of it, I always knew God was with me, and while He never promised a perfect outcome, He was always faithful in being my peace and comfort. I can remember multiple times needing His assurance and immediately receiving it through His Word, a song, or whispers of the Holy Spirit. In this passage, Abram is needing assurance that the promises God has made will happen, and God, in His faithfulness, gives Abram assurance through covenant.
God shows Abram a manifestation of Himself as a smoking fire pot and flaming torch and passes through the divided animals. Fire can be an image of God’s wrath as well as His power, holiness, and protection. This passing through the carcasses, is a promise that your oath will be kept and would normally be done by at least two people. But we see God Himself walk through alone, showing that this promise was entirely based on His grace and His work alone. God promised His faithfulness by taking on this covenant with Abram.
The amazing part of scripture is that God is always pointing us to Jesus. Abram didn’t have to do anything in order for his descendants to receive the Promised Land, God will fulfill His promise no matter what. The greatest of those promises is salvation in Jesus Christ, and just like God’s promise to Abram, we have the assurance of our salvation no matter what we do or don’t do. God is with us and He will never break His promise.
