Pretzel Prayers
Pretzels have a unique shape as they remind us of connectedness. The shape of the pretzel can prompt thoughts of arms folded across a body in a posture of a hug or even a prayer. Pretzels have been used to illustrate the concept of the Trinity. The ingredients alone – flour, salt, and water – cultivate biblical images of Jesus being the bread of life, the living water, and calling us to be the salt of the earth. For this week’s Lenten Moment, consider buying a bag of pretzels and enjoying them as a snack with your family.
Read and talk about the following verses:
Matthew 5:13-16
13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Pray together and thank God for sending his Son Jesus; thank God for the provision of food such as the pretzels; ask God to help you to be the salt of the earth – to be a follower of Jesus who lives out the truth of loving God and loving our neighbor. Consider buying some snack size bags of pretzels and passing them out to your neighbors.
